Mind the Gap
For maximum energy efficiency, reach for the foam
The largest overall step in the insulation process is the fiberglass batts in walls, floors, and ceilings. However, it’s also crucial—not mention required by code—to address the smaller areas where thermal transference occurs, such as in the spaces around door and window frames, access points for plumbing and electrical, and even the very narrow spaces between framing members.
For these situations, the most effective product with the easiest application is expanding foam insulation. There are numerous brands on the market, but generally all go on easily and expand to fill spaces, giving you a complete air seal plus the added benefit of discouraging entry by pests and rodents.
Estimates of energy cost savings vary between manufacturers and climate conditions of any given location, but suffice it to say that long-term benefits will, over time, greatly offset the cost of application.
